Myanmar

A Convoy of Hope team is currently managing its Myanmar disaster response effort from Bangkok, Thailand. Your donations are making this full scale response possible.  After clearing initial authority inspections, two truckloads of supplies were sent to in-country partners. Upon arrival, these supplies were distributed to victims of the cyclone.

Six large shipping containers, (approximately 240,000 lbs.) are currently en route to Myanmar.  These loads consist of protein-enriched rice casserole (donated by Feed My Starving Children of Minneapolis, Minn.) and other nonperishable food items and supplies.

In addition, Convoy of Hope has purchased and shipped 10,000 LifeStraws, a personal water purification device that will provide an individual with up to one year's supply of safe drinking water.  Federal Express has generously donated the transportation of these life-saving devices along with five-gallon buckets, latex gloves, face masks, and more.  An additional 5,000 LifeStraws have been ordered and will be supplied to an in country partner for distribution upon their arrival.

Your generous contributions are what make these type of response efforts possible.

Along with a primary partner, a long-term staging area for the recovery effort is being established in Bangkok for the continued receipt and distribution of food, water, water decontamination tablets, water filtration units, and medical supplies to treat dysentery and diarrhea.

With knowledge gained through the tsunami and Katrina responses, Convoy of Hope leadership is anticipating the magnitude of the long-term recovery needs.  A regional response team has been assigned to Bangkok to oversee ongoing activities and partner relationships for at least the next several months.

Your help is needed to continue these operations.  Your gifts and ongoing support are making a difference in the lives of the Myanmar people.  Please continue to help Convoy of Hope bring help and hope to the victims of this tragedy in Myanmar .

Convoy of Hope, together with our partners, has been able to bring four truckloads of aid (food, shelter material, water, and rehydration tablets) into Mynmar. They made it safely and the materials have been distributed. In addition, COH purchased, in cooperation with HealthCare Ministries, $5,000 worth of medicines to be shipped in. A shipment of 10,000 LifeStraws, (water purification units), has been delivered to our warehouse in Thailand and is going on the next overland shipment. Two more truckloads should arrive in Myanmar this week.

During the past week, Convoy of Hope was able to bring together a coalition of partners, including AGWM, GAIN (Global Aid Network), FIDA (Finnish International Development Agency), and PAOC/ERDO (Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada/Emergency Relief & Development Organization). We were able to establish a list of "in country partners" and agreed on a 6-12 month response plan.

Thanks you for your generosity. Your donations will enable us to help the unfortunate victims in Myanmar .

The Convoy of Hope Disaster response team is in Bangkok, Thailand working to get materials and personnel into the worst hit regions of Myanmar . Reports from partners inside Myanmar indicate that approximately 300 refugee camps have been established which are accommodating 250,000 people.

According to Oxfam International, another 1.5 million people could die from waterborne diseases unless more aid can reach devastated regions. Thousands are in IDP (Internally Displaced Person) camps and there is very little food is going in. Dysentery has set in due to water conditions.

Convoy of Hope has arranged the shipping and warehousing in Bangkok for a large shipment of individual water purification units. Through our relationship with Federal Express, they are picking these units up in China and shipping them for free into Bangkok .

Convoy of Hope CEO, Hal Donaldson called on people to give generously so more deaths can be prevented. "Every day is critical to their survival," he said. "Every donation can save a life. Please help Convoy of Hope respond to victims of this devastating disaster".

We are purchasing medicine in Thailand in order to help victims stave off the effects of unclean water. News reports and first-hand observation state that this is an immediate concern for the victims. Thousands have already died from the diseases associated with impure water, and more are facing the same grim prospect.

Our team attended meetings this morning with a coalition of aid partners in the region. Convoy of Hope is working together with them to establish distribution routes and methods in Myanmar . As a result, 2 trucks left Bangkok en route to Myanmar carrying water, tents, water purification pills, and other supplies. We have partners in the country to effectively distribute these products to the victims.

In addition, plans are being made for the long term recovery as well. Containers of vitamin enriched rice are being readied for shipment. Convoy of Hope is planning on being involved in this response effort for possibly the next 6 months.

We need your help! Your gift will make an immediate impact. In one region, reports have stated they quit counting the dead at 100,000 and started counting the living instead.

Thanks you for your generosity, and your donations to help the unfortunate victims in Myanmar .

The estimated death toll of Cyclone Nargis, that hit Myanmar on May 2nd has reached 100.000. In the flooded Irrawaddy delta alone a million people are reported to be homeless. Convoy of Hope and the VPE (Dutch Assemblies of God ) will be working together to help cyclone victims. Convoy of Hope has opened a Dutch account Giro: 60150 for donations to help these cyclone victims.

A Convoy of Hope assessment team has just returned from the region and reported massive destruction and widespread human need. They reported that after the twelve-hour storm, roads were completely washed away or obstructed by large debris. Most areas are without electricity, clean water and phone service. The damage is of tsunami proportions.

Convoy of Hope is in contact with OWZ workers inside of Myammar and are currently assessing how we can best help. Help us with your gift to assist the victims of this disaster. Donate here using our donation page.
