Darfur

Convoy of Hope and the Education Development Organization of Sudan are partnering to provide clean water (bore holes with casing and hand pump) to improve the living conditions of the refugees of the Darfur genocide. Most are living in makeshift camps in and around the cities of Nyala and Geneina in Darfur, West Sudan .

The majority of diseases in these refugee communities are water borne. Due to the lack of security and fear of armed bandits, people are afraid to go to the river beds (which normally only provide muddied water anyway.) Women and children run a high risk of being attacked, raped and murdered.

Convoy of Hope in partnership with EDOOS aims to drill a minimum of 20 wells and provide 100.000 people with pure water.

The United Nations has described Darfur as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.  Since the beginning of the conflict between the government and rebel groups more than 2 million people, mostly farmers and inhabitants of small villages, have fled and live in refugee camps without access to basic sanitary conditions.

On 15 September 2007, the 5000 visitors at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam celebrating 100 Years of Pentecost, donated 20.000 Euros to several water projects in Africa . 12.000 Euros will be used to drill wells in Darfur .
